the one where Summer Zoe has hip surgery

When Summer was in high school, her senior year, she stopped playing ball.  She had taken a bad fall between her sophomore and junior year and damaged her pelvis and hip area.  She had surgery on her right hip, the one she cut with the most on the court, and at that time, the doctor told her that she'd know when it would be time to do the other.  Over the last 2 years, it just kept getting worse and worse, so over the summer break, she decided it was time.  

We made the trip up last week and that's the reason why we are staying home for the 4th.  She's got 2 weeks of recovery time before she can start PT and even walking again.  I have a wedding coming up in Colorado, (HELLO, Rebecca!!!) and I plan on taking her with me to "get away".  I mean, she did just get back from Europe, so it's not like she hasn't "gotten away", but still.  Everyone needs a goal to work towards.

I took these photos with my iPhone.  I've been following a guy online and watching his videos and tutorials and learning more and more tricks about it.  Getting better all the time.  I'm loving having it with me all the time!  Such a great way to document life.

Trying to find a vein that will work.  Hello!  Not fun, but the nurses were great about being gentle.  Summer always has a hard time.

Lots of waiting.  This time the hold up was from her doctor's office. They needed orders from him before they could start anything.

Doctor Scheinberg was autographing her hip. They want to make sure they operate on the right one.  Gulp.  I realize accidents can happen and when you have back to back patients, I'm sure he wants to be sure as well. Sign that leg, sign that leg!

I couldn't just sit.  I walked around the parking lot a time or two.  Anything to keep busy when your kid's in surgery, right?

I've gotten into the habit of photographing the sky lately. You know, to give a feel for the day.  Hot and sunny in Dallas.

After surgery, which lasted just a about 2 hours, we were brought back to her room for recovery.  Last time she was so sick afterwards. We were really worried she was going to have a rough time again.  They gave her some crackers and we waited to make sure she was OK.  When she was a little girl, she would throw up and NOT STOP.  It was awful.  It would trigger a reflex and she would just throw up over and over again, and almost get hydrated.  Dr. Farmer, remember him?  he gave me a prescription to keep on hand for when it happened.  

She liked the graham crackers more then the saltines.  Can't say I blame her.

PT came in to show her how to walk with crutches.  She can put no weight on this leg for 2 weeks.  

The hydrocodone was kicking in.  Girl was sleepy!  But she was also ready to get out of there.

We waited.  And then waited some more.  Lots of paperwork and details to work out.  We were waiting on the insurance company to get back to us on a machine.  The last time they gave us a machine to take home.  Not this time.  Things have changed in the insurance world.  The PT said something about not getting them back and that they. had machines all over the country.  

She slept on and off for a while.  Devin made phone calls for work.  And me?  I sat and took photos.  Gotta do something.  

We decided to take her home that day instead of staying in Dallas another night.  I knew she could rest better at home and the doctor said use the drugged out time to travel.  Sounded good to me.  We had orders to stop every hour and 1/2 and get up and move.  We hooked up her leg compressions to a power adapter and off we went!  It took us a lot longer to get home, but I was so thankful we did. The older I get the more I appreciate my own bed.

The girl had to catch up on her social media.  Hello!  

Back home and doing PT.  I'm thankful this went well.  I'm praying and hoping it receives all her pain and she can lead a productive life.  These hips have kept her from doing almost everything a normal college girl does.  She doesn't play IM's.  She can't ski or jump or workout in the gym.  Even running or a light job causes tremendous pain.  I'm praying for a full recovery. I know she is as well.
